William R. (Bill) Greatrix
Bill Greatrix was the top local cyclist during the 1880s and 90s when cycling was all the rage. After four electric lights were installed on the PAAA Grounds, bicycling became one of Peterborough’s first nocturnal athletic events. In 1887 Greatrix won the Corby Cup, a significant award, in a five mile race in Belleville. Soon after he issued a challenge for a $50 gold medal (to be supplied by the loser) to any cyclist from Montreal to Toronto who would race him. He had no takers.
