John Grant, Sr.

Lanky John Grant’s wizardry with a lacrosse stick propelled him to one Minto Cup Championship, three Mann Cup Championships and a World Field Lacrosse Championship.

John grew up in Peterborough, playing hockey and lacrosse. He was with the Peterborough PCO team that won the Canadian Junior Championship in 1972 when John was chosen MVP in the Minto Cup finals. He was with the Peterborough Lakers who won the 1973 Mann Cup and was MVP in the 1984 Mann Cup finals. John was a top player with the Philadelphia Wings of the professional National Lacrosse League in 1974 and 1975. He starred with the National Field Lacrosse team that won the World Championship in 1978 in Manchester, England. John’s lengthy box lacrosse career includes 14 more years of senior box lacrosse from 1978 to 1992.

John played Junior B hockey with the Peterborough Lions in 1969-70, the Oshawa Crushmen in 1970-71 and Senior A hockey with Belleville in 1976-77 and Lindsay in 1981-82.

He coached lacrosse at the minor, senior and professional levels, guiding the Peterborough senior team for eight seasons. In hockey, he coached the Midget AA Petes team to the All-Ontario Championship in 1994.

John was recognized with the Senior Male Athlete of the Year award from Peterborough in 1984.
