Paul Brown has taught Judo for more than 45 years as a volunteer at the Peterborough Family YMCA.

During his lengthy tenure as a sensi or head instructor at the YMCA Hatashita Judo Club, Paul has demonstrated true sportsmanship and an unflagging commitment to excellence, inspiring generations of local residents.

He has tirelessly promoted Judo, not only as a method of self-defence but also as a way to develop discipline, self-control and confidence.

He was promoted to fourth degree Black Belt status in 1997 by Judo Canada and has helped 15 of his students to achieve black belt status. His students have been successful in competitions at the Provincial level and in qualifying for national championships. Paul has taught Judo to classes at Sir Sandford Fleming College, Trent University and many other community organizations.

He earned many medals in tournaments, placing second at the CNE Judo tournament in Toronto in 1965. A certified Provincial A referee, Paul has been a regional administrator in the sport. He chaired the Judo section of the Ontario Winter Games in Peterborough in 1998. He received a Certificate of Merit from the Government of Canada in 1987 for his contribution to his community. He was awarded an Ontario Volunteer Service Award for his commitment to volunteerism in 2001 and that same year was given the City of Peterborough Community Betterment Award.
