Gary (Hobie) Holbrook
Born in Peterborough in 1948, Gary has had a distinguished sporting career. He was an outstanding goaltender playing 5 years for the Don Bye Junior B’s. He was invited to the 1967 TPT Petes training camp serving as back up goalie for 3 years and playing 7 games. He was considered one of the elite players in the City Men’s Softball League during his playing days. He was the runner-up to the City League MVP in 1967 and won the honour in 1970. He was a league All-Star and was the league hitting and home run leader in 1972. In his youth he won Provincial OASA Championships in Bantam and Midget in 1962 and 1964. He played on 7 Men’s City League Softball Championship teams. He played with Purveys, the 1968 Ontario Intermediate Softball Finalists. From 1975 to 1978 he played in the Eastern Ontario Fastball League and was named league All-Star in 1978. He won Provincial Slo-pitch Championships in 1988, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2000 and Canadian Slo-Pitch Championships in 1995 and 1996 and 3rd in 1993.
Gary has continued to play a major role in the sporting life of this community by sponsoring and supporting many teams – baseball, basketball, slo-pitch (men’s and women’s) Peewee boys and Intermediate and Midget Women’s Hockey Teams. He continues to provide leadership and support to the Peterborough Baseball Association as an executive member and Association President.
