Arthur G. (Rubber) Heal
Art Heal was slight of stature but he had a great skating adroitness and resiliency, earning his nickname of “Rubber,” “Mighty Atom,” and “Dancing Dervish.”
He played with Albion Knitting, City Bantam Champs in 1930 and with King Edward, City Public Schools titlists in 1931. As a second baseman and leadoff batter, Art played on six City Softball League Championship Teams in the 1940s after a number of seasons in the Southend League. Art often told his opponents he was going to bunt, do it, and still beat the throw to first base. As a senior, Art skated with the best, playing left wing on the “Razzle Dazzle” line with Bun Kingdon and Honey Tompkins. They played for teams that in 1939-40 won Ontario and Eastern Canada titles and the 1941-42 club which took OHA Sr. B honours.
In CGE Shop Leagues, Art won numerous bowling and softball awards, and after retiring he became proficient in curling.
He also coached midget and juvenile hockey. He died in 2012.
