Walter J. (Monty) Montgomery
Dubbed by the Examiner as the “prince of point men”, Walter J. Montgomery was Peterborough’s first hockey captain (1891), a position he held for seven years. He was a member of the 1894 and 1895 Ontario Hockey Association Junior Champions. Along with being recognized as one of the province’s best hockey players, “Monty” was an ardent cricketeer for 15 years, a football player and the town’s lawn tennis champion in 1895 and 1896. During his Peterborough years he was an executive member of both the local Maple Leaf Cricket Club and the Victoria’s Cycle Club. Walter Montgomery worked for the Ontario Bank and left Peterborough to become an accountant in the Port Arthur branch in 1898. A banquet was held in his honour where many prominent citizens of the day spoke of his contribution to sports in Peterborough.
