Born in Peterborough, a WW2 Veteran, Gerry spent a lifetime in the service of his community. He fulfilled many roles during his tenure in minor hockey in Peterborough and Keene. He was responsible for negotiating the amalgamation of the Peterborough Minor Hockey Association and the Peterborough Community Church Hockey League into the Peterborough Minor Hockey Council, so the best players could represent the city in competition and served as President for many terms. He was instrumental in reviving the Junior B team in the late 1970s. Gerry was a long time OMHA Rep for Peterborough and was on the OMHA Executive from 1979 to 1986. He was in charge of all referees officiating OMHA games in Eastern Ontario. As an OMHA Director, he travelled many times to Europe with touring minor hockey teams. He was co-organizer of the Labatt’s Men’s Invitational Tournament becoming one of the largest of its kind in Ontario. In 1981 Gerry was awarded the PMHC Life Membership Award “In recognition of many years of unselfish service to minor hockey.” Gerry’s untimely death in 1986 at age 61, was a major loss to local minor hockey and the OMHA. He was highly respected and recognized as a dedicated hardworking volunteer for minor hockey. Many awards have been named in his honour including the PMHC President’s Award; Labatt’s Men’s Invitational Hockey Tournament renamed the Gerry Carey Memorial; and the annual Midget Tournament of Champions Scholarship Award.
