Gillian Stamp
Gillian is responsible for introducing women’s field hockey to the Peterborough area in 1966 and the game continues to be played in the local schools. She coached Trent University from 1973 to the early 1990s and produced consistently competitive teams. She was named the OWIAA Coach of the Year in 1988-89; served on the executive for six years and refereed the sport for 20 years. Her contribution to the game of volleyball has been significant. She coached the Trent University women’s team from 1973 to the 1990s; created women’s and men’s volleyball leagues; served as Region IV Convener in the 1980s; was instrumental in forming a competitive women’s volleyball team and created a YMCA recreational league. The league saw enormous growth with women’s, men’s and co-ed divisions. Gillian was a volleyball official at all levels for over 20 years. From 1961-65, she was a Peterborough Legion Track & Field Club coach. In the 1970s and 80s she was a strong supporter of the Peterborough Women’s Basketball League. Added to this impressive resume, she was a basketball coach and referee; gymnastics coach and judge; Level 3 Certified Coach – Volleyball and Field Hockey; Junior Co-ordinator for Quaker Park Tennis Club for 10 years; taught senior fitness classes at Trent University and Fleming College; and coached for Peterborough throughout the existence of the Arborough Games. To quote one of her athletes “this remarkable woman has left a legacy that will continue through the lives she has touched so gently, while promoting the spirit of competitive and recreational athleticism throughout the community over the greater part of her life”.
