Wilfred R. (Ray) Harding
This native of Douro Township had a brilliant 16-year career as a goaltender for Peterborough hockey teams at all levels. In his heyday, Ray Harding was regarded as one of the finest amateur netminders in Ontario.
This diminutive goalie began his career in the OHA at age 17, with Peterborough Juniors in 1936. Two years later, he joined the Intermediate Club which he backstopped to Ontario and Eastern Canada Intermediate A titles. By 1942, the team name was changed from Petes to Peterborough Soldiers, and Ray was again in the nets when they won Ontario Sr. B laurels.
During his tenure with the Petes, Ray was twice named Most Valuable Player. As a goalie in the days before wearing face masks became popular, he was indeed a brave man, but he did not suffer any serious injuries. Ray also played in the City League Softball, refereed in the East Peterborough Hockey League and coached a juvenile hockey team. He died in 1999.
