Wendy (Lamers) Fitzpatrick

Wendy was a natural swimmer early on, being taught by her parents, and the Juniper Island swim program on Stony Lake. At the age of 10 she joined the Peterborough Y Swim Club, which became the Trent Swim Club, and was a member from 1976 to 1988. During this time, she established herself as an elite swimmer. For many years she held Trent Swim Club records in the 50, 100, 200, 400 free and the 200 individual medley, and may still hold club records. She was a silver medalist at the Canadian Swimming Championships in 1984; a consolation finalist in the 1984 Olympic Trails; ranked 13th in the world in the 50m freestyle in 1985; and competed at the 1988 Olympic trials. While attending the University of Guelph, Wendy competed in Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union competition in 1986, 89, 90 and 1991. She was the bronze medalist in the 100m breaststroke at the 1991 CIAU championships and was named CIAU Athlete of the Week in February of 1986 and February 1991. She was the 1986 OWIAA silver medalist in the 100m breaststroke; 1991 gold medalist in the 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke, and silver medalist in the 50m freestyle. Wendy was named Ontario Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference All Star in 1986, 89, 90 and1991 and held the 1986 OWIAA record for 50m breaststroke. Wendy was a successful swimmer across all disciplines and was recognized as one of the most prolific swimmers in the history of the University of Guelph. A much-decorated university athlete, she was named the 1986 Dr. Mary Beverly Burton, Rookie of the Year; the 1991 Guelph University Most Outstanding Swimmer; 1991 W.F. Mitchell Sportswomen of the Year; the Guelph University Female Athlete of the Year in 1990 and 1991 and was recognized as a CIAU All-Canadian. Wendy was inducted into the University of Guelph Hall of Fame in 1998. Wendy continued her love for swimming through the Masters Swim program, and forever acknowledges the Peterborough district for igniting her passion for sport.
