Thomas (Tommy) Foley
Tommy Foley, like many Canadian youth, was a good hockey player as a youngster, starring in goal for city teams but his main sport interest was baseball.
A Peterborough native, he came up through the minor system and eventually joined the Raybestos senior team where he played several seasons. Sudbury of the North Ontario League lured him there for a season, following which he returned to central Ontario with Oshawa, then came back home in 1939, this time to stay.
According to coach Eddie Murphy, Tom was an exceptional player, a .300 hitter who several times won league batting championships. He possessed a powerful throwing arm, great speed on the bases and covered centre field flawlessly. Tom was once offered a pro contract by the New York Yankees but turned it down for family reasons.
Tommy Foley was a perennial all-star, on a par with the best in Ontario. He died in 1993.
