Ron Thompson
Born in Liverpool England, Ron arrived in Peterborough in 1968. At that time there were five senior men’s teams and one boy’s team playing in the Durham Youth League. These six teams represented the sole participation of soccer locally. Ron immediately recognized the need to develop the game at the youth level and along with a friend, approached the Lions Club for funding and the Lions Youth Soccer Club was born. During the first year of operation, 80 players were registered in two divisions. Over the next 25 years, soccer grew at an unbelievable rate at all levels of competition and there is now a league for every player to play soccer all year round. Although many people have contributed to the game’s phenomenal success, no one person has been more instrumental to that success than Ron Thompson.
Since 1971 the duties and responsibilities that Ron provided include: Co-Founder and President; Registrar, Publicity Chairman, Referee-in-Chief, Referee Assessor, Secretary for Referees Association, Sponsorship Chairman, Scheduler, Coach, Instructor and player. He was Secretary of the East Central Soccer Association and Advisor to the City of Peterborough with regard to field and strategic planning. Ron’s philosophy of equal opportunity has been embraced by soccer executives over the years and has had a tremendous influence on the reputation Peterborough enjoys in the soccer community. Soccer lost an ardent supporter when Ron passed away in 1995. The PYSC hold the annual “Ron Thompson All Winners Tournament” each year in honour of Ron’s contribution to youth soccer.
In November 1995, one week after he passed away, the Ontario Soccer Association awarded Ron Thompson with the “Meritorious Service Award” for special services to the game of soccer.
