Ben Floyd
Born in Peterborough, Ben grew up playing lacrosse and hockey. He was a member of the 1956 Nisbett Junior B Ontario Lacrosse Champions and the 1957 UE Juniors, Ontario Champions and Eastern Canadian Finalists. He played for the senior lacrosse team in 1958. He managed the Hastings Legionnaires to the 1961 Minto Cup and coached the Peterborough Bantam and Midget All-Stars from 1968 to 1970. In 1971, he stepped in to take on the coaching duties of the Peterborough Junior team half way through the season. He took the team to the seventh game of the Minto Cup final before losing in overtime to the Richmond Roadrunners. Ben went on to guide the Peterborough Juniors to four straight Minto Cup Championships 1972 to 1975. The 1974 PCO’s went undefeated, 46-0 — a feat no other team has accomplished. In 1978 he coached the Peterborough Red Oak Seniors to the Mann Cup Championship and lost to Victoria Shamrocks in the 1979 final. He coached his last season with the Senior Lakers in 1980.
Ben Floyd had a successful career in lacrosse as a coach and manager. He contributed to the Peterborough Minor Lacrosse Association in many capacities, including President. In 1975 he was awarded the City of Peterborough ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ in recognition of his dedication to the game of lacrosse. He served on the Executive of the Ontario Lacrosse Association. In 1991 Ben was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame as a Builder.
