Robert (Rock) Batley
From a 1948 King Edward Public School Outstanding Athlete Award, Rock Batley went on to spend four decades dedicating himself to sports. He played softball, baseball, hockey, lacrosse and two years with the Orfuns Football Club.
The highlight of his minor lacrosse career was a Minto Cup Championship with the Mimico Mounties in 1951. In seventeen years of Senior “A” Lacrosse (1952-1967) playing for Peterborough, Brooklin and Hastings, this high scoring defenseman amassed 500 points, including 368 goals in 334 games. He played on ten Eastern Canadian Lacrosse Championship teams with the Peterborough Timbermen, Trailermen, Mercury’s, and Brooklin, winning the Mann Cup three times. While playing Senior ‘A’, he was also coaching the Hastings Juniors. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the game of lacrosse, Rock Batley was inducted into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1998.
Rock, a goaltender, played minor hockey in Peterborough and senior in the Trent Valley Hockey League. He was the trainer for the Peterborough Petes from 1960-1966; the Omaha Knights of the Central Hockey League 1966-1971; the Providence Reds of the American Hockey League from 1971-1977 and had a short stint in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers.
For almost 40 years Rock was a game official in a number of sports – lacrosse, hockey, floor hockey, broomball and softball. Rock Batley gave as much to sport as sport gave to him. He died in 2014
