R. H. R. (Russ) Scriver
A Lakefield native, Russ Scriver is considered one of the gamest and best-liked competitors in our area, a great contributor to sport in Peterborough.
Russ was a high school standout in football, and excelled in Jr. B hockey, but his best years were spent in the RCAF during World War II. Upon returning, he played with the 1946 Cobourg Galloping Ghosts when they won the Canadian Intermediate championship. The next three seasons, he played with Peterborough Panthers, often being on the field for close to 60 minutes despite a variety of injuries which would have stopped a lesser player.
As a catcher, Russ played for several City League softball championship teams. He also has strongly supported local minor sports for more than two decades, producing winners in Mark Street United hockey and softball teams, Br. 52 Legion ball teams, and topping achievements with the 1963 Eastern Ontario PeeWee baseball champs. He has twice received Civic Awards for his contributions. He died in 1996.
