Peter Vanwensem

Dutch-born Peter Vanwensem arrived in Peterborough in 1956 and immediately cast his influential shadow on the sport of soccer in Peterborough and district.

He played with the Peterborough UEW Soccer Club for 16 seasons, progressing to the administrative level where he has been a leader for four decades. During this period Peter was an active referee, arranged schedules and acted as senior official to all levels of soccer including men, women, youth and oldtimers. His dedication culminated in his becoming President of the Peterborough branch of the Ontario Referees Association in 1990 and 1991.

Peter is justifiably proud of being a founding member of the Peterborough Lions Youth Soccer Club which began in 1971 and has more than 2000 participants annually. He participated for 10 years in the Saturday morning youth training at King Edward Park.

He helped start the Oldtimers Soccer Club, the Friday Night Oldtimers League, was chairman of the Multi-Cultural Oldtimers tournament and the Kawartha Oldtimers Friendship event involving players from all over Ontario. He was a co-organizer of the Snofest Sno-Soccer tournament and has made a significant contribution as a committee member of the Eastgate Park project. Since 1987 he has been the Soccer Challenge tournament chairman for the Peterborough City Soccer Club.
