P.J. Sullivan
P.J. Sullivan was a pioneer baseball player in Ashburnham. He played in the first recorded game for the local nine called the “Pine Groves” when they played Cavanville at the Circus Grounds near Little Lake on September 9th , 1876. That game marked the first newspaper mention of an organized game of baseball in the Peterborough area. Sullivan remained the premier pitcher in town for 10 years and pitched in Whitby in 1886. His battery mate for most of those years was F. J. O’Neil, a local blacksmith. Sullivan is described as having thrown “twisters” so he is now viewed as being an early proponent of the curve ball.
