Michael E. (Mickey) Redmond

Michael E. (Mickey) Redmond

Michael Edward (Mickey) Redmond was six years old when his family moved to Peterborough from Kirkland Lake, so most of his hockey skills were learned here. His father, Eddie, was a senior player who came to Peterborough to coach and play with the Sr. B team.

Mickey was an exceptional talent who played his junior with the Petes and played only 15 games in the Central Pro League before graduating to the very strong Montreal Canadiens. Although it was not too obvious in results in his early NHL seasons, Mickey had a powerful and accurate shot. It wasn’t until he was traded to Detroit as part of a deal which brought Frank Mahovlich to Montreal, that Mickey reached stardom.

In his first three full seasons with the Wings, he scored 42, 52 and 51 goals respectively. Then he was injured and it prematurely ended his NHL career. In 538 games, he had 233 goals, 195 assists for 428 points. He was an NHL 1st team All-Star in 1972-73, and second team All-Star in 1973-74.
