Marvin Buchan

Marvin Buchan

Marv is a city native with above-average soccer ability. However, it is as a coach and instructor that he is best recognized. He played from 1949 well into the 1970s, achieving All-Star status numerous times in the 50s and 60s. He coached Eastern Ontario regional teams from 1973 through 1977 in Ontario Summer Games (bronze medal).

Buchan played for Peterborough Merchants (1949-52) UEW of the PDSA (1953-69), and for Oshawa and Toronto league teams, winning awards for outstanding contribution to the game. He returned to coaching during the 70s, achieving a national Level III badge, coaching minor and senior teams including Purity Packaging, UEW, and Kiwanis to two PDSA titles, and Vimar to a provincial league title.

Marvin earned civic awards in 1976 and 1977, and was a founding member of the Lions Youth Soccer Association. He is kindly remembered as one who, for more than 20 years, enjoyed going in all kinds of weather, to King Edward soccer pitch every Saturday morning to “coach the wee ones.”
