Lionel Ownsworth
Lionel Ownsworth immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1956 and has been a permanent fixture on the Peterborough sports scene ever since. He excelled in badminton and soccer and has served as both a coach and a player.
He played soccer for many years, winning the Carlings Sportsmanship Award in 1959 and sharing the Peterborough Soccer League Sportsmanship and Ability Award with Lionel Alex Graham in 1971. He coached soccer for over 15 years and was awarded the Sir Sandford Fleming College R.A.C. Appreciation Award in 1986.
Ever since his arrival in Peterborough, Lionel has belonged to the Peterborough Badminton Club where he has served as past president for 40 years and he will be a 50-year member in 2006. Lionel won the Central Ontario Closed Men’s Singles in 1968 and 1969. In 1968, he won the Belleville Invitational Men’s and Mixed Championship. In 1970, he played in the Ontario Winter Games in Toronto and in 1986 he won the Kingston Invitational Men’s Doubles ‘B’ Trophy. A high point of his career was winning the Ontario ‘C’ Mixed Championship with his wife.
Locally, Lionel is a badminton legend. He has been the Peterborough Badminton Club Men’s Singles Winner nine times, has won the Mixed Doubles five times and has captured the Men’s Doubles Championship an amazing 17 times with six different partners.
Over a period of almost 50 years, Lionel Ownsworth has had a major impact on the Peterborough and district sports scene.
