Leslie T. (Les) Ascott
Les Ascott excelled as a two-way football player, both in his Peterborough school days and later, with Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League and Halifax Navy teams during the years of World War II. His main position was inside guard.
As a youth, he played all sports while attending Central School, excelling also at soccer. In 1937, his PCVS football club won the senior Ontario championship, and in 1939 he played with Peterborough Orfuns in Ontario finals against Toronto Balmy Beach.
Les played on Grey Cup winners (Argonauts) in 1945, 1946 and 1947, then again in 1950 and 1952. His teammates included such Canadian greats as Joe Krol, Royal Copeland, Steve Levantis, the Stukus brothers, Red Storey and Lew Hayman.
He also tried his hand at coaching for one season – 1954. He died in 2013.
