Leonard Michael Powers
Len (Smokey) Powers was a great all-round athlete who excelled in football, hockey and lacrosse. In 1969 he played for the Thomas A. Stewart football team, capturing the COSSA championship.
In lacrosse, Len was captain of the Peterborough PCO’s who won the Minto Cup in 1972 where he received the Best Defenceman Award. In 1973, he was a member of the Peterborough Lakers who claimed the Mann Cup. He then moved on to play professional lacrosse in the National Lacrosse League where he was a member of the Rochester Griffins who won the Nations Trophy in 1974.
After playing professional lacrosse for two years, Len returned to Peterborough and played for the Mann Cup Champion Lakers in 1982. In 1984 he served as player/coach and again led the Lakers to the Mann Cup Championship.
Further, Len played for the Peterborough Junior ‘B’ hockey team in 1970-71 where his leadership, desire and dedication won him the award for the Most Valuable Team Player. He not only led the Lions to the Eastern Ontario Championship but also to a gold medal in the 1970 Ontario Winter Games in Etobicoke, and another gold medal in the prestigious Canadian Winter Games in Saskatoon, SK.
Len also played for the Peterborough T.P.T. Petes under coach Roger Neilson in 1967, 1968 and 1969.
Len Power’s induction into the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame is indeed a fitting testimonial to his accomplishments as a highly skilled and versatile athlete.
