Len Minty
Leonard Gordon Minty was born in Peterborough and grew up at the YMCA. In 1964 representing PCVS, he won two gold and a silver at the Eastern Canadian High School Swimming Championships. At Queen’s University his medal performances in OQAA competition earned him the Clarke Trophy (Outstanding Swimmer) three times and in 1969 the Jack Jarvis Trophy (Outstanding Athlete).
Len raced the First Annual Stoney Lake Mile Swim in 1960 as a 14 year old and has progressed through Open and Masters to the Grandfather division. In 43 swims he has won his division 31 times. Len races each year to honour his father, Gord Minty.
In Masters Swimming, Len was Ontario Champion 56 times, Canadian Champion 13 times and a bronze medalist in the 1992 World Championships. He set over 60 National Records covering all five strokes and all six distances. In 1987 he broke the World 400m Individual Medley Record twice.
Len’s paddling career started in 1974 with 16 consecutive victories in Upper Stoney’s Annual Gull Rock Race. He was a crew member of Sing Fai – Dragon Boat Champions in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, San Francisco and Nejime (Japan). Currently he is active in Masters flat-water canoe and kayak racing.
For thirty years Len coached high school athletes who amassed numerous OFSAA victories. He has coached dragon boating in Canada and the U.S.A. for nearly twenty years, nine with Peterborough’s Survivors Abreast. He was Race Director for the Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival from 2001 to 2009.
