Lambert Collins
Lambert Collins belongs to the early baseball and hockey eras of this city. He was a rugged, aggressive hockey player on Peterborough teams of the 1920s. In 1923, he was a member of a good team, which lost out in Ontario playdowns to Toronto Varsity, a team which ultimately played in the Memorial Cup finals. Collins’ hockey career was spent mainly in the old Brock Street Arena.
A catcher, Collins excelled in baseball. His throwing arm was extraordinary and very few runners tried to steal second base when he was behind the plate. In 1923, he played on the Lakeviews of Peterborough, a team which won the Ontario Junior championship.
A number of Lambert Collins’ baseball-playing colleagues of the 1920s summed up their description of him very succinctly, saying simply “he was the best.” He died in 1988.
