L. C. (Les ) Burton
Les Burton was an outstanding athlete, particularly in hockey, baseball and softball, who spent his entire athletic career in this area.
He played his early hockey years in the South End Hockey League and was a member of the 1931-32 champion Maple Leaf bantam club. The next season, his Ranger club won the juvenile crown. Burton starred with the Peterborough team in 1939-40 which won the OHA Int. A title as well as the Eastern Canada championship. He later played with Lakefield Legionnaires and Omemee Black Hawks.
In baseball, Les was with the 1930 Maple Leaf bantam titlists and was a standout outfielder with city teams through the 1930s. Former Examiner sportswriter Cec Perdue once stated that Les Burton, Tom Foley and Chuck Kearns formed the best baseball outfield he ever saw here. Les also played softball with such teams as Plaza Billiards, Knights of Columbus and Peterborough Legion. He died in 2002.
