Joseph (Joey) Johnston

Joey Johnston was born in Peterborough in 1949. He played his minor hockey for Sacred Heart Church of the Church League and the Peterborough All-Star teams. In 1961 he was a member of Peterborough’s Ontario Minor Hockey Peewee Championship team. In 1964 he played Junior “B” hockey in Peterborough and led the team in all scoring departments. He started his Major Junior hockey career in Peterborough before being traded to Kitchener.

In 1970, when with Cleveland, Joey made the American Hockey League’s First All-Star team. He also played in the Central League with Omaha before making the NHL.

Drafted by the New York Rangers, Joey played in the NHL for six seasons with Minnesota, California and Chicago. He played a total of 322 NHL games, scored 85 goals and 106 assists. Joe was appointed captain of the California Golden Seals and represented them on three occasions in the NHL All-Star Game.

An injury in a car accident prematurely ended Joey’s playing career. He returned to Peterborough and started coaching.

Joey coached the Lakefield Midgets to an OMHA Championship in 1991. He continues to coach at the “Triple A” level in the Peterborough All-Star system.
