Joseph H. (Joe) Blewett

If you were watching hockey locally in the 1940s, that blur that went past was probably Joe Blewett, the Lakefield flash. Known for his speed and skill in hockey, Joe start in softball and later dedicated years to assisting minor sports.

Joe joined the Int. A Petes in 1938-39 and was a key member of the 1939-40 OHA and Eastern Canada championship team. After a stint in the Canadian army, Joe played with the Petes until 1949, then returned to Lakefield to play and coach Int. B hockey. In 1955, he started a minor hockey program in Lakefield and promoted the game there for the next 20 seasons. He coached Peterborough’s first two entries in Quebec’s renowned Peewee tournament, in 1960 and 1961.

As a centre fielder he starred 15 seasons in City Softball League play, and was a member of the league champion teams in 1942-43-44. In 1956, he was manager of Lakefield Charltons, Ontario Intermediate A titlists. He died in 2003.
