John W. Kindred

John was born and spent his formative years in Peterborough, until a golf scholarship took him to Florida at age 19. From age 13, he was successful in junior and men’s events at all levels.

He was a member of the Ontario Junior Team for six seasons and as an amateur won many competitions, including the Kawartha Lakes Invitational, Kingston and Belleville tourneys, and championships of both the Kawartha Golf and Country Club and the City of Peterborough.  He played out of both Kawartha and Pine Crest clubs locally. John turned pro in 1963 and had considerable success in Canada while on vacation. He was second in the 1973 Ontario Open and second in money-winnings on the ’73 Canadian tour. He won the Fredericton and Moncton Opens in 1974, was second in the Alberta Open, and won the Quebec Open in 1975 and 1976.

His pro career started as an assistant at Longboat Key Club and he moved up to Head Pro in 1964. John remained Head Professional at Florida courses, spending summers teaching at a Peterborough course.
