John Amer
Born in Hamilton, ON, John moved to Peterborough in 1958 and was an immediate star in both basketball (as a forward) and softball (third baseman).
Regarded as one of the finest basketball players in city history, he was a forward on the Ontario Int. A championship team of 1963. The same year, he coached a city women’s team to another provincial title.
In ten years’ participation in City League Softball, John played third base for two Ontario Int. A championship squads. He also played a season with the city’s senior baseball team. John Amer was named Peterborough’s Athlete of the Year in 1963.
He has continued coaching, and played with Oldtimer teams which won numerous tournaments and awards. He retired after the 1983 season when he was named Most Valuable Player of the Oldtimers Basketball League. He died in 2005.
