Jean Castle
Jean Castle excelled in four sports — basketball, curling, golf and softball — during a lengthy athletic career.
She was an all-star in basketball, playing on city championship teams, and was a key player of the Towne Togs provincial championship team in 1949. She also coached junior teams to championships from 1947 to 1950.
Jean played outfield on Westclox softball teams that won city championships from 1942 through 1947, and in curling she skipped several rinks to local and district bonspiel victories. She was a member of the rink that won the Hallitt Trophy at the Oshawa Curling Club in 1962, 1964 and 1965.
Her golf prowess was considerable, too. She won the city medal play honours in 1952, 1955, 1960 and 1963, as well as being a strong provincial competitor for several seasons. She was the first woman to score a hole-in-one on the 170-yard 6th hole at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club. She died in 2005.
