J. E. (Jackie) Dugan
Jackie Dugan started his pugilistic career locally, but soon went on to make a name for himself at provincial and national levels. He was described by sportswriters of the day as showing “lots of class and… stepping circles around his opponents.” He fought 105 bouts as an amateur and lost only ten. In 46 professional matches, Jackie Dugan lost only two.
Jackie won the Canadian Middleweight Championship in Port Arthur, ON (now Thunder Bay), on 11th of March, 1947. He later retired unchallenged and unbeaten as title-holder. Dugan was also the Middleweight Armed Forces Champion in 1944-45.
In later life, Jackie Dugan remained continually involved in helping young boys to a straighter life through boxing, and was at one time Director of St. Alban’s Boys Club in Toronto. He died in 2005.
