Isobel M. (Izzy) Nichols

Isobel M. (Izzy) Nichols

Born in Peterborough and raised on a farm in Keene, Isobel Nichols was a good athlete in many sports. She won three provincial titles in softball with Lakefield Kingdon Lumber under Bobby Crowe; two with the Cobourg Angels and three in women’s hockey. She played and coached in the Peterborough Girls Hockey Association and played basketball in the Peterborough Women’s Basketball League.

It was softball where Isobel made her mark. She was an all-star at first base but could play third or shortstop equally well. She was also a Provincial award winning pitcher. But,it was her hitting that has made her a legend in the Province of Ontario. She was the queen of the long ball and there were few ball parks that could contain her bat. She is the recipient of many individual awards from the Provincial Women’s Softball Association for her hitting prowess – 1984 Player Achievement Award for a “235 ft. out of the park home run” in a Provincial Play-off Game; 1985 Special Player Achievement Award for “two over the fence home runs” in Provincial Championships – one in the gold medal game; 1990 Player Achievement Award for Top Batter in Senior Tier II Playoffs; 1991 Player Achievement Award for “hitting a Grand Slam’ in a Provincial Play-Off Game. During her career, Isobel Nichols was considered one of the most outstanding softball players in the Province of Ontario.
