Ira Dundas
When lacrosse is discussed among old-timers, the name of Ira Dundas immediately comes to mind. He helped start the Auburn Box Lacrosse Club and starred for many years. He was all-around athlete, a standout in many sports.
Ira was a member of the Ontario Sr. B lacrosse teams from 1938 through 1947, a star player on the YMCA basketball quintet, a pitcher for Harrison’s and Sugar Bowl softball teams, and one of the best gymnasts and weightlifters. A newspaper article once said “he is something more than a novice in boxing…and as a runner showed promise.”
Among numerous hockey honours Ira earned were the Senior League Championship and the DeLaval and Lebarr trophies in 1936. He won two golf titles at the Tamarac course and later became a curler of note.
Born in Fenelon Falls, he moved here at age 12 and almost immediately became integrally involved in sport, which continued for a lifetime of quality activity. He died in 1991.
