Howard (Howie) Dalton
Like many honourees, Howie Dalton excelled in numerous sports — softball, baseball, track and field and soccer. He starred in all of them during a four-year span in the Canadian Army during World War II, much of it overseas. He played soccer on the army runner-up team, was on the 1944 and 1945 baseball championship team, and the 1945 softball titlists. He also played for Toronto Tip Tops in the World Championships.
Howie moved to Peterborough after the war, in 1946, and his immense ability quickly was apparent in both City League softball and COBL baseball. After finishing second in MVP honours in 1947, he won it in 1948 in softball. The same year, he was named top player in baseball and won the COBL batting crown with a .468 mark, one of many during his career.
Dalton was also a successful coach — with Cobourg Legionnaires (baseball); Hibbert’s in Douro Men’s softball where he was Coach of the Year in 1975 and 1976; with several City League softball teams and CGE Shop League teams.
