Harry Walsh Sr.
Harry Walsh was considered a pioneer in the development of minor sports in the City of Peterborough. He served on the YMCA Boys Work Board for many years; an organization established in the early 1930s to provide recreation opportunities for youth in the community. Harry was one of the founding members of the Peterborough Community Church Hockey League and became the first President in 1955. He promoted the inclusion of all denominations and served the PCCHL in many capacities – president, treasurer and as the director, convenor and church representative for 18 years. Harry was the founder of minor hockey and softball at George Street United Church, serving as president and church rep for many years. He managed and coached novice and pee-wee hockey teams for over ten years winning the 1969-70 OMHA Pee-Wee “AAA” Championship. Harry was also on the Executive of the Peterborough Minor Lacrosse Association in the early years of the organization. A good athlete himself, this left handed catcher won three consecutive Eastern Ontario Intermediate A Softball Championships with the Fashion Craft Intermediates during the 1930s. Harry was an avid bowler and golfer and helped establish CGE Mixed and Men’s Golf Leagues and was president for both leagues. Harry Walsh believed in the value of sport in building character and good citizenship and lived by the principle that all children should be able to participate regardless of financial or social status. He received many awards in recognition of his contribution to youth sports.
