Harold (Shrimp) McDougall

Harold (Shrimp) McDougall

Harold McDougall began his hockey career as a member of the late L.S. LeBarr’s Lakeview team in the City League. Because he was just 14 years old, McDougall earned the nick-name ‘Shrimp’, but his skating acceleration and tricky stick-handling made him a star among much older players.

Later, he became a member of the Peterborough OHA Junior squad and attracted attention to his clever play. Oldtimers recall a game played against Brockville Juniors, won by Peterborough 2-0, in which McDougall scored both goals on sensational solo efforts.

At a time when Owen Sound was dominating junior hockey, they got McDougall to join their team. Playing centre, he was a sensational playoff performer, scoring five goals in one game, and the Owen Sound Grays won the 1927 Memorial Cup. He went on to play pro with Teddy Oke’s Millionaires of Toronto, and with Calumet, MI, winding up his hockey career in his home town where he played Intermediate and Sr. B. He also did some coaching. He died in 1943.
