Greg Marchen
Born in Newmarket, Greg Marchen moved to Peterborough at age two and went on to excel in three sports – hockey, softball and lacrosse.
As a puck-chaser, Greg played Jr. B hockey in this city, then commuted for nine seasons to play Sr. A in Belleville, ON. He was offered a pro contract with the NHL’s St. Louis Blues organization, but turned it down. In later years, Greg played with Liftlock Golfland Oldtimers.
Greg played 10 seasons at first base in City League softball, starting at age 16, but ultimately left softball to pursue lacrosse activities. He joined Peterborough teams of the late 1960s, played with the Lakers in 1970-71, and with the winning Peterborough team in a one-game Mann Cup final in Brantford in 1973. He played professionally with Maryland Arrows for two seasons and when the pro league folded, he went back to softball where he continued in the Industrial League. There, he was named MVP and four times won batting titles.
