Grant Heffernan

Grant Heffernan

A Peterborough boy, Grant Heffernan grew up playing hockey and lacrosse. In 1952 he joined the Peterborough Minor Lacrosse School. Grant played on Bantam, Midget, and Juvenile Ontario Championship teams. He was a member of the 1961 Minto Cup Champion Hastings Legionnaires and voted series MVP. Grant had an outstanding career in senior lacrosse playing for Brooklin, Peterborough, Detroit and Kitchener, finishing in the top 10 scoring five times in the OLA, fourth in the NLA in 1969, and from 1961-1972, recorded 1,119 career points. Grant is a member of both the Canadian and Ontario Lacrosse Halls of Fame.

Grant was also a gifted hockey player. Following three seasons with the Peterborough Junior B’s, he received a scholarship to Providence College. A member of the 1964 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship team, Grant was named an ECAC All-star in 1964 & 1965 and was named to the 1965 American Coaches’ All-American team. Playing for McMaster University in 1967-68, he was an Ontario Inter-Collegiate All-Star. Grant was inducted into the Providence College Sports Hall of Fame in 1977.

A teaching career led to coaching hockey and lacrosse. Grant spent 32 summers instructing at Huron Hockey School helping young players of all ages develop their hockey skills. In 1976 and 1977, Grant coached the Scarborough Saints Jr. B Lacrosse team and led the Saints to the 1977 Canadian Championship. He has been regarded by his players and students as an outstanding coach and educator.
