Fred Garvey

Sport, especially baseball and softball, was an important part of Fred Garvey’s life. He was a fine example of hustle, determination and team play. As a youth, he was a catcher in softball and forward in hockey for Immaculate Conception teams that won titles in peewee and bantam Church League competition.

After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II, where he boxed with distinction at the 135-pound level, he returned to shine in several sports. Fred was a catcher and second baseman on city baseball teams, one of which won an Ontario title in 1949. He later played for Westclox, Legion and East City teams, and was playing coach of a Knights of Columbus team that won the City League championship. In hockey, as a forward, he played for both Legion and Petes senior teams which won league championships, and in football, he was a quarterback and running back with deceptive speed.

Fred instructed baseball clinics across Eastern Ontario and Garvey coached-clubs won junior baseball and softball laurels, plus Church League hockey titles.
