Elaine Hewitt carved out an incredible athletic career in swimming and track at the local, provincial, national and international levels.

Her career is studded with gold medal performances including a world record swim in 1986 in the 100-metre breast stroke event at the International Cerebral Palsy Championships in Belgium where she also won a silver medal in the 100-metre freestyle swimming event.

This exceptional athlete established seven provincial records in swimming and track and in 1986 was elected to the Cerebral Palsy Sports Hall of Fame.

Elaine was a member of Canada’s Cerebral Palsy Team from 1980 to 1986 and won numerous gold, silver and bronze medals in swimming and track in international meets in New York, Michigan, Texas and Belgium.

Chosen Peterborough’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1984, Elaine was recognized provincially with an Ontario International Achievement Award and by Ontario’s Best Ever Athlete Award Program in 1985.

Born in Montreal in 1958, Elaine has lived in Peterborough from the age of 10. Her success at the highest level of competition is a shining example of what can be accomplished by a dedicated and talented wheelchair athlete. Elaine is the first wheelchair athlete to be inducted into the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame.
