Dr. Lionel (Camel) King
Lionel (Camel) King was the biggest star on the Peterborough junior hockey teams that won OHA titles in 1894 and 1895. He also starred in lacrosse and football and was a leading referee in both hockey and lacrosse. In baseball King was a standout second baseman with a .355 batting average (1899). He was the quarterback of the local football team in 1895 and a star running back for the next three years. 1895 was also the year that King took a one year fling at bicycle racing. After winning several local races he ended up placing third in the Canadian Novice Championships. In lacrosse, King played centre on the Peterborough teams from 1894 to 1899. In addition to playing, he was an executive member of the Canadian Lacrosse Association in 1897 and 1898 and of the OHA in 1898 and 1899. King left Peterborough to establish his medical practice out west in 1901. Thirty years later he was still considered by local sportsmen as “the best all-round athlete Peterborough ever produced”.
