Dave Ruthowsky
There are few softball pitchers anywhere who match the skills and longevity of Dave Ruthowsky.
Dave’s softball career spans 40 years and includes teams that won 14 provincial championships, five Canadian championships, the 1976 World co-championships in New Zealand and a gold medal in the 1979 Pan-American Games in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Rated as one of Canada’s best softball pitchers, Dave has won 30 top pitching awards, twice at the National championships.
Born in Kingston in 1948, Dave moved to the Peterborough area in 1968. He pitched Peterborough Heating to two OASA Junior A championships, in 1968 and 1969, winning the MVP in the 1968 All-Ontario final.
Dave then moved to British Columbia where he was an ace with a Victoria team that won seven Provincial championships as well as the World co-championship and the Pan American Title.
Dave returned to the Peterborough area in 1980 where he won several top pitcher awards in the Peterborough Mens’ Softball Association over the next decade. He pitched Robert Young Ennismore teams to PMSA titles in 1985 and 1987.
The quiet spoken Ruthowsky has been recognized with several softball awards including the PMSA Dave Leether Award in 1988 and Wayne Mowry Trophy from the Peterborough Umpires’ Association in 1991 for his contributions to softball. In 1969 Dave was Peterborough’s Junior Athlete of the Year.
