Ben McMaster
Ben McMaster learned the rudiments of soccer in England, where he was born, and played semi-pro before coming to Canada at age 22, in 1929. For the next 18 years, he played with CGE teams and was captain for 12, player-manager for two.
In 1931, he set a league scoring record of 61 goals and, two years later, he astounded everyone by scoring 76, a record which still stands. Ben played on all of the All-Star and City representative teams of his era.
Never one to waste time or effort, McMaster served as President of the Peterborough and District Football Association for 1 1/2 years – 1933-34 – while recovering from a broken leg. He finally retired as a player in 1949 but helped coach and referee for three or four more years.
His collection of soccer awards is too lengthy to mention. However, it should be noted that his team earned an average of two awards annually during his playing career. He died in 1995.
