Barbara (Blade) Williamson

Barbara (Blade) Williamson

Barbara Williamson had a long and successful sports tenure in Peterborough interrupted for a few years in the late 1930s and early 40s when her family lived in Ottawa.

Her greatest recognition came from the game of golf, but she was also an above-average athlete in softball, basketball and curling. A team called Choates and a more famous one called Westclox covered her softall career. She was a member of Westclox when it won the city championship in 1932-33.

As a cager, Barb played for Westclox, 1932-33 junior champs, and also the 1934-35 Westclox senior basketball team champions.

Golf, however, seemed to be made for her athletic skills. She was women’s champion of Peterborough Golf and Country Club five times: 1950, 1952, 1953, 1957 and 1973.  Barb also won the women’s Medal Play championship of Peterborough in 1961. In later years, she curled successfully, once reaching the finals of the Ontario Tankard competition.
