Astrid Verduyn

In track and field, Astrid Verduyn was a Canadian champion five times and Ontario titlist on 10 occasions between 1963 and 1969. A gifted all-round athlete, Astrid was a member of several COSSA championship volleyball and basketball teams as well, and she played for the York University volleyball team which won the 1969 Ontario championship.

As a track competitor, she excelled in the 80-metre hurdles, high jump, long jump and javelin. It was as a 13-year-old that she first achieved prominence. She represented Peterborough Legion Track Club and won Ontario and Canadian championships in several age categories, setting three provincial and one national record in the process. She also won eight of 11 events entered in the St. Peter’s High School track meet in 1964. When limited to five events in 1966, she won and set records in all of them.

Astrid was a member of the Canadian Junior National Track Team and won the senior Ontario pentathalon championship in 1967.
