Archie Weir
Archie Weir was a top performer in hockey, softball and football with city teams of the 1930s. Born in Simcoe County, he came to Peterborough at age 12 and his sports career began at Central School. As a defenceman in hockey, he captained St. Johns’ Juniors to the District title in 1929-30, after which he went to Niagara Falls and was a member of the 1931 Ontario Jr. A championship club.
He returned here in 1933 and played intermediate hockey until the outbreak of World War II. While overseas, he coached and played with an army hockey team, European champions. Archie later coached Oddfellows Jr. B teams several seasons, the player list including Red Sullivan, Jake Wade and Arnie Dugan, all members of our Sports Hall of Fame.
Archie played left field for Sugar Bowl teams which won several Eastern Ontario softball titles in the late 1930s, and was a charter member in reviving football during the 1930s, playing several seasons with the Orfuns. He was also active in lacrosse, basketball, golf and bowling. He died in 1975.
