Alan M. (Al) Menzies
An above-average athlete in many sports, Al was particularly outstanding in baseball. Born in 1928, his earliest triumphs came in softball; he was a catcher for the Southend Trojans, City Junior Champs. The same season, he also played for the Southend team in the City Baseball League and earned the Fred Craig Memorial Trophy as the league’s MVP.
Menzies backstopped City baseball clubs from 1947 through 1955 in the Central Ontario and Toronto Viaduct Leagues. The 1949 team was the COBL Champion. His power hitting .414 batting average led the 1950 Petes and he was the team’s MVP as well. An accomplished basketballer, Al was a member of the 1945 Ontario Champion PCVS Midgets and the 1947 Ontario Intermediate A title winners.
