John Elliott (Curly) Mason
John (Curly) Mason came to Peterborough in 1950 to play hockey for the Senior B Petes, and lacrosse for the championship teams of the Peterborough Timbermen. Born in Fergus, ON, another lacrosse hotbed, Curley played for the 1950 Mann Cup Champion Owen Sound team. In all, he would compete nine times for the Mann Cup, symbolic of Canadian Box Lacrosse supremacy, and would add a sixth cup ring in 1966 before packing up his gear.
Curly was not only a very fine exponent of hockey and box lacrosse, but as a youth he earned numerous medals swimming and diving.
During World War II, Curly served overseas with the Royal Regiment of Canada – Infantry Unit.
Curly was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1982, and the Fergus Hall of Fame in 1986. He died in 2004.
