Donald W. Bye

Don, a Peterborough businessman, has consistently supported local teams financially, and actively at the administrative level for more than 30 years. Don’s sponsorship of teams began in 1960, starting with the Junior “B” hockey team which he continued to sponsor for ten years. His first association with lacrosse was in 1967 with the Don Bye Excavating team. A year later in 1968, he was instrumental in helping form the Professional Lacrosse League and the Lakers team was born and has continued to the present. In 1969, the Lakers won the East-West Bowl, emblematic of professional lacrosse championships. The Lakers returned to the OLA in 1970 and Peterborough was the runner-up for the Mann Cup in 1971 and won the trophy in 1973.

Don has sponsored Peterborough minor lacrosse for many years and his dedication to these teams was a major reason for Peterborough being considered internationally as a lacrosse power.

Don, unselfishly, has supported other sports in Peterborough, an example is his contribution to the development of the Fisher Park minor baseball complex.

Don Bye’s generosity and support at all levels has strongly benefited Peterborough’s sports community. He died in 1995.
