W. Lloyd (Moon) Wootton

W. Lloyd (Moon) Wootton

William Lloyd (Moon) Wootton was one of the most popular players in Canadian lacrosse and during his playing days as a goalie, set a record of achievement which will be almost impossible to match. He was on five straight Mann Cup championship teams, four of them playing for Peterborough.

Moon played junior in his home town of Owen Sound, ON, and in 1950 led Owen Sound seniors to a Mann Cup crown. He signed with Peterborough the next season. Wootton was a crowd favorite with his ability to play angles and a reflex action which scooped the shots, sending the ball high over the backstop. He was a key factor in Peterborough taking the Mann Cup four straight seasons, 1951 through 1954.

For many seasons he was considered the No. 1 goalie in Canada, and he was always at his best when playoffs rolled around. He was Mann Cup MVP three times. After 10 seasons with Peterborough, Moon retired and moved to Port Hope in 1960, playing hockey and golf until his death in 1989. He is a member of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
